How carriers price a parcel
Carriers do not bill on what a parcel weighs. They bill on the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, which is volume divided by a divisor the carrier sets. A pillow weighs almost nothing and ships like a brick, and that single rule explains most of the gap between what sellers budget for shipping and what they pay.
Because dimensional weight is volume, cutting an inch off each side of a box can drop it a billing tier. Fitting products into fewer box sizes and reducing void fill is one of the few shipping savings available without negotiating rates, and it compounds across every order.
Rates step by zone rather than by mile, so a long shipment inside one zone can cost less than a shorter one that crosses into the next. If you have volume, warehouse position relative to your buyers changes the average cost more than service level does.
Residential delivery, fuel, remote area and oversize surcharges are applied after the base rate and are easy to leave out of a model. An estimate without them looks competitive and then reconciles badly, which is why the comparison here shows the base and the additions separately.

Yes, free with no signup. It runs in your browser using published 2026 rate tables.
Length times width times height divided by the carrier divisor. If that number is larger than the actual weight, the carrier bills the larger one. It is the reason bulky light parcels cost so much.
It depends on weight, dimensions, zone and service level rather than on the carrier. Light small parcels often favour one carrier and heavier or larger ones another, so compare the specific shipment.
Fuel and common accessorial surcharges are shown separately from the base rate so you can see what is discretionary and what is not.
Published rates are the starting point. Negotiated rates and third-party platforms discount them, sometimes considerably, once you have consistent volume.
No. These are US domestic rate tables. International pricing adds customs, duties and different zone structures.
