Pro Tip: The "combined rate" is what you actually pay. Louisiana has the highest combined rate (10.13%) even though California has the highest state rate (7.25%), because Louisiana parishes add 5%+ in local taxes. Always check your exact city/county rate for precision.

How US sales tax stacks up

Why the rate you owe is rarely the state rate

Sales tax in the United States is not one rate but a stack. The state sets a base, the county adds to it, the city can add again, and special districts sometimes sit on top of that. Two addresses a few miles apart can owe meaningfully different amounts on the same product, which is why quoting a state rate on an invoice usually understates the total.

Destination, not origin

Most states tax on where the buyer takes delivery rather than where the seller sits. For an online seller that means the rate follows the shipping address, and a catalogue sold nationwide touches hundreds of combined rates rather than one.

Working backwards from a total

If your price is advertised tax-inclusive, the tax is not the rate multiplied by the shown price. You divide by one plus the rate to recover the pre-tax amount first. Getting that the wrong way round overstates the tax and understates your revenue, which is a common error on marketplace reconciliations.

Nexus decides whether you collect at all

Owing tax and being required to collect it are different questions. Economic nexus thresholds vary by state and are usually set on sales value or transaction count in a period. This tool tells you the rate; whether you have crossed a threshold is a separate check worth doing before you register anywhere.

Questions about US sales tax

Is this sales tax calculator free?

Yes, free with no signup. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is transmitted.

Which states have no sales tax?

A small number of states levy no statewide sales tax, though local taxes can still apply in some of them. The calculator reflects the statewide position for 2026 and shows a zero base where that applies.

How do I calculate sales tax backwards from a total?

Divide the tax-inclusive total by one plus the combined rate to get the pre-tax price, then subtract to find the tax. The reverse mode in this tool does that for you.

Are local and county rates included?

Yes. The tool separates the state component from county and local additions so you can see what makes up the combined rate rather than just the final number.

Are these rates official?

They are the published 2026 rates. Local rates change more often than state rates, so verify against the state revenue department for a transaction of any size.

Does this tell me if I need to register in a state?

No. That depends on economic nexus thresholds, which are separate from the rate. Check the threshold for each state where you have meaningful sales.
